Clay Havill

Clay was born and raised in Washington, Indiana. He graduated from the University of Evansville with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. While attending the University of Evansville, Clay played all four years on the men’s soccer team. He served as a three-year captain, was twice selected by his teammates as the Most Valuable Player, and was named an Academic All-American his senior year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Aside from soccer, one of Clay’s favorite memories was spending a semester studying abroad at Harlaxton College in Grantham, England.

Clay then served as the assistant soccer coach for the University of Southern Indiana men’s soccer team before deciding to change career paths and pursue his law degree.  He attended Indiana University’s McKinney School of Law, graduating cum laude in 2007, and he is the third generation Havill to graduate from Indiana University’s McKinney School of Law. Before joining Gonterman, Meyer & Havill Law, LLC in January of 2025, Clay was a partner at Ziemer Stayman Weitzel & Shoulders, LLP from 2007 to 2022 and then an equity member at Stoll Keenon Ogden, PLLC from 2022 to January 2025.

Clay married his high school sweetheart, Brooke, and they have three amazing children: Cohen, Norah and Camille. Clay spends the vast majority of his free time with his family, usually traveling to watch soccer and basketball games and practices, but he also still manages to sneak in a round of golf every now and then.

Over the course of his legal career, Clay has assisted numerous clients with a wide range of legal issues.  He concentrates his practice on advising a range of small businesses and large corporate clients throughout southern Indiana—primarily in Evansville and Washington. Clay focuses on commercial litigation and trial work, with particular emphasis on construction litigation, employment law claims, and business and shareholder litigation. Clay also serves numerous small business clients as their “outside in-house counsel”, where he obtains a thorough understanding of the specific legal needs of each business client. Clay counsels his business clients daily on all legal issues they encounter, from negotiating and drafting contracts and advising on employment issues to matters of corporate governance and entity formation. He has likewise developed skill and experience in advising a wide range of health-care related clients, ranging from hospitals and physicians to physician practice groups. Given his litigation background, Clay also handles select family law and personal injury cases.
